Summary0000277: Rocky 9 DVD Installer crashes during VirtualBox install
DescriptionFYI - This has several layers of fail.

DVD image is Rocky-9.0-x86_64-dvd.iso with checksum 6fe05fb0992d0ed2e131da669e308bb10e8f5672ad5c0a1ec331ca3006d24493

I tested the image first via the installer and it passed.

VM is configured with 4 processors, 16GB RAM, 100GB virtual disk image.

Boots from media to installer and proceed through any items you need in order to install.

On my first attempt, it failed at language selection.

On my second attempt, it failed at choosing partitioning.

On my third attempt, it failed when addressing the root password not being set.

In all cases, an error pops up saying "An unknown error has occurred". This is Fail 1. The final error is "pyanaconda.errors.ExitError: gnome-kiosk exited on signal 11"

I would attach the dump, but there is no way to get it out of the machine because, at this point, it stops accepting any keyboard input - you can't copy/paste because the VM additions aren't installed yet. You can't report the bug with the "report bug" button, because you can't enter credentials or a URL - this is Fail 2.

What is your host OS?
What is the version of virtualbox?

OS: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (as reported by /etc/lsb-release)
Virtualbox: 6.1.34-dfsg-3~ubuntu1.22.04.1 (as reported by dpkg)

Thanks in advance.

I was going to suggest you ask in the virtualbox forums. But since you are getting it from Ubuntu, you may have a better chance to get help if you use support venues in the Ubuntu community.

Fair enough. I'll ask around there. But, if everything else works (Other Ubuntu versions, ReactOS, Windows 10, Kali, etc.), then I would submit that VirtualBox is likely working correctly.

I'm running Rocky 9 using VirtualBox-6.1-6.1.38_153438_el7-1.x86_64 on a RHEL-7 host.

According to this VBox forum post:

https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=106754&p=522177&hilit=Rocky#p522177

"First, VirtualBox 6.1.34 had a number of incompatibilities with latest Linux kernels, you should upgrade to 6.1.36.
Next, Rocky seems to be a fork of Red Hat, so you should have chosen "Red Hat (64bit)" as the template to copy."

So you may want to update the virtualbox package.

Ah, thanks for looking that up. I was going to do it after dinner, but you saved me the trouble.

That said, I was only looking at Rocky because I was interviewing at a company that uses it, so I wanted to kick the tires. Since they have declined to make me an offer, rather than pursue this further, I'm going to watch Beavis and Butthead and paint miniatures.

Cheers.

Feel free to close this. I don't seem to be able to.
